Ampleforth Abbey is a working monastery, home to a community of Benedictine monks since 1802. Visitors are welcome to explore the Visitor Centre, Church, Gardens and Grounds, with free parking, a Tea Room and Gift Shop on-site.
The Abbey and grounds are open 7 days a week,
from 10am – 3pm (Nov -to Feb) and 10am – 5pm (Mar - Oct).
There is no entry fee to visit the Visitor Centre or Abbey Church. Guided tours are available on Thursdays and Sundays for a small charge.

Ampleforth Abbey offers visitors a tranquil and unforgettable escape from everyday life. Begin your day at the Visitor Centre, where you can learn more about the history of Ampleforth Abbey and the life of the Monastic Community, before visiting the Grade 1 listed Abbey Church designed by eminent architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. It also has the largest known collection of ‘Mouseman’ furniture, handcrafted by Robert Thompson.
Beyond the Visitor Centre you can explore 1,200 acres of serene countryside including lakes, woodland and Ampleforth Abbey’s heritage orchard, with over 1,500 trees and 60 apple varieties.
Accessible The Abbey Church, Visitor Centre and Tea Room offer step-free access over one level and fully accessible, modern toilet facilities. Due to the natural topography of the valley, slopes may be encountered when moving between our buildings. The Orchard may be unsuitable for some wheelchairs. Please contact us to discuss your accessibility needs in advance.

13 miles from Thirsk Tourist Information.
Head north towards Millgate and follow the road until you reach a small roundabout. Turn right at the roundabout onto Long Street and continue until you reach another roundabout. Turn left at this roundabout and follow Sutton Road up Sutton Bank (not suitable for caravans). Continue along the A170 until you reach a right turn signposted Ampleforth. Continue along this road until you reach a T-junction. Turn right at the T-junction and then left at a second T-junction. Follow the road until you reach the entrance to Ampleforth Abbey on your right (after approximately half a mile).
