One of the UK's leading non-professional orchestras. At its most spectacular it is an exceptionally fine and very large symphony orchestra, often working with top class international soloists. However, it also operates as a chamber orchestra, giving smaller concerts in a variety of venues. The players (a mix of professionals, semi-pros, teachers, students amateurs and talented schoolchildren) come from all over the north of England.

Sowerby Music runs 'Music For Life', an outreach programme for primary and special schools in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire. It originated with the society’s aspiration ‘to encourage a life long love of music within our young people’.
