The ‘Coat of Hopes’

Blog image

The Holy Rood House Community are excited to be part of the ‘Coat of Hopes’ – a climate change artwork on an ecological supportive walk that arrives at Holy Rood House on Fri 22nd Mar.

The Coat of Hopes is a patchwork pilgrim coat, on an ongoing walk through Britain. Made, worn and walked by many hundreds of people during and since the pilgrimage on which it was created - from the south coast of England to the gates of COP 26, the UN climate summit, in Glasgow autumn 2021.

We invite you to an evening hearing about this inspirational coat with coffee at 7.15 to start at 7.30pm on Fri 22 Mar at Juliet House, 12 Sowerby Road, Thirsk YO7 1HX. We will also be taking the coat into the Market Place on Easter Saturday.

The Coat is made up of pieces of blanket into which people have worked their griefs, remembrances, prayers and hopes for the place they call home. It walks, ever calling those who encounter it or who share it, into the present. Supported by its warmth (love) - to bear its weight (responsibility). So each might “wear the promise that we all belong together” as we seek to respond with our whole self to the climate and ecological emergency.

Holy Rood House are displaying the coat in Juliet House from Sat 23 Mar until Wed 3 Apr where it will be taken to the next stop on its journey to York.

The book ‘Walks Without Stiles’ is a guide to the best accessible walks in the Yorkshire Dales. Many walkers are restricted when walking in the countryside by the use of stiles rather than gates on footpaths.

You buy the book at Thirsk’s information centre, £9.95.

If you are someone with a disability, have a non-athletic dog or simply becoming older and stiffer stiles can prove impossible, ruling out many great walks. This book rights this wrong and describes 32 of the very best ‘Walks Without Stiles’.

The walks vary from the short riverside strolls to longer climbs up some of the higher mountains in the Dales.

The publisher Access the Dales is a groundbreaking charity that supplies a number of All Terrain Vehicles at hubs across the Dales for people to book and use free of charge.

As you can imagine this can be life changing for people who want to independently access the countryside and beauty spots in the Dales but have mobility issues. The vehicles are designed to tackle the rough terrain of footpaths and tracks that regular wheelchairs couldn't cope with.

They also organise events to support people to try out the vehicles and join them on guided walks.

Details can be found on the website and you can book directly from there.
